I currently have a few very small part time jobs that are flexible and that have worked for me so far.  I am still feeling unsatistfied, and like I need more.  I would love to earn more money, to get out of the house a few days a week, and to work on a team of some sorts with other 'real' people (the jobs I have now are all solitary).

I have been struggling with this for years, and this is usually the time of the year where I start to get ansy about trying to find a part time job that will fit our schedules.  It is just so hard, because my husband travels alot, sometimes with only a few hours notice, and my kids are still too young to be left alone.

Anyone else have these feelings?

JuliAnn your singing my song! I too have been going through the same thought process the last few wks. We have had major repairs to our van lately, it was in the shop for a week straight. We are currently discussing putting a large sum of $ into it or getting a new vehicle. We of course would love a new vehicle, but are discussing downsizing, new vs. used, etc. With that said, we still cannot afford any vehicle on one income. SO, do I too try and get more hrs. at the restaurant (evenings/nights?) or get a "real job" (my words)??? Either way, what about all the days off the kids have, sick days, appts., functions at school, practice/lessons after school, homework, taking care of the million things around the house that needs to be done. Hubby doesn't even get home until 5:30 as it is. The list of needs on boths sides of the arguement is endless. I checked into jobs at the school, but do not want to take a job for the sake of just taking anything and then being miserable.

You now, a lot of moms I know get jobs in their child's school district and work as aides.  You can do this either part-time or full-time and your schedule is the same as your kids!  I don't know how much it pays, but it might be a good thing to look into.

I just got a call to come in for an interview/orientation for a seasonal job working a few hours one or two days a week.  I am kind of excited, and hope it works out.

Congrats! You'll have the job withn minutes of the interview. Does this seasonal job conflict with LMC???? When I was talking to my husband about more hrs. at the restaurant, I was thinking to myself, "I could still make it to LMC on Thursdays".

I'm stressing out just being on the substitute list for this year.

I know a lot of people that have kids work, I just don't know how they do it.  I would like the extra income but I would miss the availability I have for my kids.

Izzy, the job is doing flu clinics in the area.  I am not sure what the schedule is yet.  BUT, I was told that if I get the position I would be able to pick and choose which ones I would work at.  So, I am pretty sure LMC will be safe! Phew!

Ooh that picking and choosing part is very attractive and you are so friendly that the older folks will adore you!! Thank goodness it won't conflict with LMC. I wonder if Shelia has missed us?? Yes, Detroit, that is certainly part of my concern. I too like being available for my kids and not be stressed out about getting into work when I have a sick one at home (that would really do a number on me, knowing my child is home sick without me there) or having the umpteeth snow day off tc. HG, the schedule at school is ideal for sure, but honestly I don't think I could hack it at the school everyday all day for the pay.

It will only be another couple of weeks before all of the retail world will be hiring for seasonal help- that usually work from Oct-Jan and the best are kept on, even if not scheduled every week. They are usually desperate enough for someone with some work experience/ethic that they don't mind limitted availablilty. I worked at the Children's Place last winter, hired as seasonal, kept afterward, and I was only available after 7pm weekdays (not a problem once stores extend their hours for the holidays) and weekends.  It's a great way to test drive a job, or even test juggling a job period, with your families needs. And the employee discounts are nice for Christmas.

You have heard me say the same thing, JuliAnn!!  When my youngest started kindergarten last year I was lost and didn't know what to do with myself during the day.  That is why I decided to find a job within the school that way I didn't have to worry about days off/snow days, etc.  I do still get that guilty feeling when I have to call off when they are sick but if anyone should understand it would be a school..

I hope the new job works out!!  I agree with izzy, you will have the job within minutes of the interview!!  That is nice being able to pick and choose where you go, that will give you alot of flexibility.  Keep us posted on how everything goes!
